Mehtab Bagh

Description

Mehtab Bagh also known as Moonlight Garden is a charbagh complex in Agra, North India. It is located in the north of the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal complex on the opposite side of the Yamuna River, in the floodplains. The garden compound, square in shape, measures about 300 by 300 metres (980 ft × 980 ft) and is thoroughly aligned with the Taj Mahal on the opposite bank.

History

Mehtab Bagh is the last of 11 Mughal-built gardens along the Yamuna River. The shape Mehtab Bagh was originally designed as the ultimate viewing place of the Taj Mahal. Some travellers and tourists know this, but you can watch and take the splendid photo of the marble monument from nearly every point and corner of the garden compound. The history of the Mehtab Bagh is rarely known, but it does have a wonderful story many would love to hear. Emperor Babur builds Mehtab Bagh in the early 1500s, and the width of the gardens completely aligns with those of the Taj Mahal. It was then properly known as the “moonlit pleasure garden”. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) surveyed the forgotten garden in 1994 and exposed the story about Emperor Shah Jahan wanted to build a black-marble clone of the Taj Mahal.
